her name was probably not rose. she had changed her name so many times over the many years that i knew her that i could not recall her original name or if i had ever known it. i had known her since i was a kid on the rez. she was older. enough for me to see her as an adult.  and almost every time I ran into her she was going by a different name. rose was just the first one i remember hearing. she wasn’t beautiful. her presence didn’t carry the weight that beautiful people do when you’re young. i once heard a guy her own age refer to her as pig face and that was pretty close to the truth. i did not feel the sadness that i do now on reflection that simply because she had not been born the lucky winner of the lottery of beauty that she was so easily dismissed, not just by others, but by me. she wasn’t particularly kind. but then I doubt that she was dealt much kindness in her life. she wasn’t funny or charming or crazy enough to be frightening. she was just this older gir...

Horse, Akoshá:tens , visits me again. Akoshá:tens speaks of Freedom. In this case the Freedom that Horse speaks of does not seem to be my own, but the Freedom of someone close to me. I gave someone bad advice recently, which in the end was me trying interfere with their ability to make a very important decision, one that would effect them much more than me. Sometimes when we think we are trying to help those we care about, we try to do so by placing reigns on them. AKSHÓTHA, GRANDMOTHER WISDOM KEEPER

Akshótha , Grandmother Wisdom Keeper speaks to me of my own Akshótha, my Tóta, my Memaire, who chose me to pass some of her Wisdom to. I was so young at the time that I did not know the privilege that she was providing to me. In fact it has only been in the last decade or so that I have come to appreciate just how much that early sharing imprinted on me. I am seeking now to [JD1]   live up to the Gifts that she gave to me, to carry those Gifts, that Wisdom, that my Tóta and so many others have given to me and to know the great privilege that it is to carry this Wisdom. This sign also reminds me that we are always only the Keepers, the carriers of Knowledge and Wisdom. They do not belong to us. It is part of our obligation in living this life to Remember, to never Forget, and to share that Knowledge and Wisdom in the way that we would a Gift, not a possession, without expectation of anything in return and without restrictions of how the receivers of the Wisdom should use it....
