Pandemic Training Diary Phase 2 Week 1: Recovery Day 1

Image
Pandemic Training Diary Phase 2 Week 1: Recovery Day 1 I’m thinking of this week as a new Phase. At least the first week will have to be low intensity, with a focus on recovery. (See my past post at: https://www.facebook.com/HITTScarborough for a description of this situation and this injury that I’m recovering from.). Started day 1, Week 1 of this Phase after finally having gotten some sleep. The pain seemed less through the night and when I woke up. Struggled far less to get out of bed. But, as I stood up and moved around, the pain went from a 4 or 5 to a 7 or 8, still not nearly the 9 and 10 of almost every minute of last week. Started with Slow Joint Circles, which I always do before doing anything else. The idea is to get the joints lubricated and ready for movement. Then did very slow and careful Shadowboxing, paying particular attention to working technique without hyperextending or accelerating, particularly on the hooking punches. Still worked Bobbing and Weaving and Fei

Pandemic Fitness Diary Phase 2 Week 1 Days 2 & 3

Pandemic Fitness Diary Phase 2 Week 1 Days 2 & 3 I started day 2, Week 1 of Phase 2 well. The pain was down near a 3 or 2. Still careful not to push too hard too fast. Started out with Suspension Based Tabata Style Workout: (See my past post at: https://www.facebook.com/HITTScarborough for a description of these exercises and my idea for alternatives if you don’t have the equipment). 2 Sets of 2 Circuits of: Yard Sprints (More like Yard Jogs at this point. Did this in my bare feet. It was a warm enough day for this. This forces me not to run Heel – Toe, which causes impact on the joints and spine.) x 4, with Suspension Push Ups x 100, Suspension Assisted Low Squats (Didn’t want to chance Pistol Squats. Did this one Holding the Straps and Starting at the Bottom of a Low Squat and coming about ¾ of the way up to keep tension on the muscles and to avoid locking joints) x 100, and finishing with Suspension Rows x 100. Then Crossover Yard Sprints (Made sure to stay on my toes to p

Pandemic Fitness Diary Week 4 Days 2 to 7

Image
Pandemic Fitness Diary Week 4 Days 2 to 7 I started day 2, Week 4 after a sleepless night. Had to have a sleepless night sooner or later. This time it was my stomach that kept me awake. This also meant that I had a lot more pain to start the day that I have in the past few. While I’m determined not to over-train, I’m also determined not to get derailed without good reason. So I stuck to my schedule today. Started out with a Dog Run. (See my past post at: https://www.facebook.com/HITTScarborough for a description of this exercise). More of a Dog Jog today. Got gassed easily and my lower back was feeling particularly fragile. Included 8 sets of Stairs and used my Walking Stick. Was feeling better by the time I got back. Kept my Suspension Tabata Style Workout down to 2 sets of 2 Circuits. (See my past post at HITTScarborough for a full description of the following exercises, and for my suggestions on alternatives) Yard Sprints x 4, with Suspension Push Ups x 100, followed by

Pandemic Training Diary Week 4 Day 1

Image
Pandemic Training Diary Week 4 Day 1 I started day 1, Week 4 with yet another good night’s sleep. I’m actually taking advantage of having a less rigid schedule to sleep in. After years of working in bars my body is used to falling asleep late. I’ve been struggling to correct that, not very successfully. But this Pandemic actually means that I don’t have to be anywhere, so I don’t have to force a change on my body. While it was a grey day, with some scattered rain, I managed to get outdoors for my Shadowboxing Workout. (See my past post at: https://www.facebook.com/HITTScarborough for a description of my approach to this exercise.) I added more footwork into this workout, including Change Ups and firing the Combinations while up on my toes and in motion. This includes firing Punches and Combinations while backing up. I was one of those trainers who stressed never backing straight up to my fighters, but I’ve come to realize that, that while this is true in theory, it doesn’t take i

Pandemic Training Diary Week 3 Days 6 & 7

Image
Pandemic Training Diary Week 3 Days 6 & 7 I started day 6, Week 3 with another good night’s sleep. That’s almost a record for me! The pain was still there, a dull roar, but far less than I’ve been living with. Once again it was tempting to go at it hard because I felt better. I did do a Plyometric Workout, but I kept it brief and down to 2 sets of 2 circuits. (See my past post at: https://www.facebook.com/HITTScarborough for a description of this type of workout and the exercises involved). Bounds x 2, with Catch Chins x 20, with Rebounder High Knee Jumps x 20, and Rebounder Plyometric Push Ups x 20. Followed by Side Kick Bounds x 2, with Push Off Chins x 20, with Rebounder Double Jumps x 20, and Rebounder Sprawls x 20. Quick Stretch. Walk. A bit of rest. And then a Hike with a friend. That was it for exercise. My diet was not as healthy but not too far off point. Who am I kidding? One meal was Popeye’s chicken. So that one was way off point. But the rest was healthy and I’ve

Pandemic Training Diary Week 3 Days 4 & 5

Pandemic Training Diary Week 3 Days 4 & 5 Day 4, Week 3, started out far better than the previous day. I got some deep sleep and the pain, when I woke up was more of a dull roar. Had a hard time getting moving though. Contentment for me is both an unusual feeling and not in my toolbox as far as motivation goes. I also wanted to stress with myself to not overdo it just because I’m having a better day. So I allowed myself to start out slowly and took my time. I always start with Joint Circles to get my joints lubricated and ready for motion. Just a few simple circles around each joint starting out with small joints like the wrists and working towards larger joints like hips and back. Today was a Suspension Tabata Based Workout (See my past post at: https://www.facebook.com/HITTScarborough for a description of the basics of these exercises and my ideas as to alternatives). Kept it down to 2 Sets of 2 Circuits. Very brief, so as not to overdo it. Yard Sprints x 4, with Suspension

Pandemic Training Diary Week 3 Days 2 & 3

Image
Pandemic Training Diary Week 3 Day s 2 & 3 D ay 2 , Week 3 started out better. Got some sleep. Woke up with a lot less pain. It was still there, but manageable. Was also in a better mood. All that fighting through the darkness does pay off, though not always right away or in obvious ways. It was a rainy and windy day today so I could go outside and maintain social distancing. Felt up to a Dog Run. (See my past post at: https://www.facebook.com/HITTScarborough for a description of this exercise). Didn’t want to overdo it just because I felt better. Although tomorrow is a day off I don’t want to bring the extreme pain back and drop myself back into the darkness. So didn’t push too hard on the Dog Run. Did some Hill Sprints (You can just try walking up and down a hill in order to increase intensity) with Push Ups x 50. Only two sets instead of 4. Then Plyo Rock Jumps x 10 with Plyo Push Ups (I found two rocks with a gap between them for this one. Adds to the stretch. But yo

Why People Got Disease

Image
Why People Got Disease This is not a Mohawk story. This is a Cherokee story. It’s a good story though. An important story. It’s about when the first People showed up on Turtle Island. It’s about why we have disease and sickness. How when those first People showed up they got on the other animals’ nerves. How they didn’t respect the other animals and didn’t respect the earth, so the other animals got together around the sacred fire and decided to do something about it. We like to think that some People are better than other People but as far as animals are concerned People all have to be taught respect. People have to be taught how to behave. People need something to keep them from crowding the planet and doing nothing but harm. Back near the beginning of People they hadn’t learn to respect the earth or respect their animal cousins so all the other animals got together and decided to do something about it. They gathered in a circle around a sacred fire and passed

Pandemic Training Diary Week 3 Day 1

Pandemic Training Diary Week 3 Day 1 Day 1 of Week 3 started out badly. I did finally get some sleep but woke up in more pain and more exhausted. Sleep hangover. When you go a long time without decent sleep a night of sleep actually makes you feel worse because your body has just started healing. Still, I’m determined not to fall off of my training schedule, no matter how hard it gets. Sometimes that’s all you have. As a fighter we referred to this as biting down on your mouthpiece. You might not win the fight and your only victory may be in not giving up, and that has to be enough. So I started out with the beginning of a full 36 Hour Fast. Followed that with Shadowboxing. (See my past post at: https://www.facebook.com/HITTScarborough for a description of this exercise).  I started out each technique, movement and combination in super slow motion so that my body, especially my lower back could get properly warmed up before accelerating the movement. The pain and exhaustion didn’
