some stubborn flame

some stubborn flame


i have struggled such
that darkness often overtakes
but i am not owned by the darkness
though the light was beaten from my many places
still some stubborn flame burns within me
though i have fallen deep and often
been bruised and bloodied by the fight
there is more to me than suffering
some defiant love of living
lifts me up from where i fall
i have struggled much
and often lost my way
thought that light might never find me
but my struggle does not define me
nor my pain nor that which i have lost
i am so much more than the scars that line me
or my darkness or my plight
i am large
i am resolute
i am the spark
not just my darkest night

There’s a sucker born every minute. Every single fucking minute. The wife doesn’t like it when I swear. She keeps a swear jar at home. I put money in every day even though we’re never going to have kids to give the money to. She’s a good woman. She’s entitled to her delusions, after all I put her through. I never mention that the jar doesn’t really have a point. Every day I put money in and it just stays there. It just sits there. We go to church every Sunday and she holds my hand, and I’m just glad that she stayed with me all these years. She knows who I am. She knows the kinds of things that I do. She knows all about me.
